围城主要表达什么意思

《围城》的直接时代背景是1937年及以后的若干年，正是中国遭受日本帝国主义侵略的时期。但要理解《围城》，必须追溯到近代特别是鸦片战争以来，中国在帝国主义列强大炮军舰之下，被迫地、却历史性地开始了与世界的接触。

中华民族的古老文明与西方文明开始了前所未有的交锋、碰撞、冲突以至交汇、融合。这种文化现象在一大批留学生——钱钟书正是他们中的一员——的身上具体地、活生生地体现出来，因而具有值得解剖的典型意义。
